Ethereum’s Supply Squeeze Just Got Real

Will record staking trigger an Ethereum supply crunch?

Ethereum is entering rare territory. Nearly 29% of all ETH in circulation is now locked in staking contracts, an all-time high that is igniting fears of a looming supply crunch. According to BeInCrypto (

see article here

), more than 35 million ETH has been staked as of mid-July 2025, equivalent to over $110 billion at current prices. That’s ETH removed from circulating markets, unavailable for trading, and creating a bottleneck that could fuel a powerful price reaction.

The big question now is whether this massive staking wave, combined with upcoming ETF pressure and institutional inflows, will drive Ethereum into a sustained bull run or trigger a leveraged squeeze on speculators caught off guard.

What’s Driving the Ethereum Lockup?

The latest staking surge isn’t happening by accident. Hedge funds and crypto-native firms have quietly been executing a strategy known as the ETH basis trade. As BeInCrypto explains, it involves shorting Ethereum CME futures while simultaneously staking spot ETH to collect yields as high as 13% annually. The trade thrives on volatility compression and stable on-chain returns.

This trend has led to steep drops in exchange-held ETH. On July 14 alone, over 140,000 ETH, worth approximately $393 million, was withdrawn from centralized exchanges, according to

Ainvest

. That kind of liquidity flight limits sell pressure and adds upward force to price action, especially during news events or funding squeezes. The setup mirrors historical bull cycle structures, where supply shrinkage sets the stage for aggressive upside once demand accelerates.

The Bullish Setup, And the Risks

With a record amount of ETH locked away, many traders believe the stage is set for a major breakout.

CryptoPotato

reports that several analysts are targeting $10,000 ETH by year-end, assuming either an ETH staking ETF is approved or institutional flows ramp up. These estimates are based on shrinking exchange reserves, deepened token scarcity, and growing derivatives open interest.

A key bullish catalyst is the probability of an Ethereum staking ETF approval, following the wave of Bitcoin and XRP products this year. If the SEC greenlights a staking-focused vehicle, especially one backed by BlackRock or Bitwise, retail and retirement account capital could enter the ETH market en masse.

But there’s a risk. Some warn that leveraged short positioning tied to the basis trade could get squeezed if ETH rallies too hard. As BeInCrypto points out, this kind of setup, where traders short futures while earning yield on staked ETH, can backfire if prices spike, forcing liquidations and compounding volatility.

Ethereum’s Deflationary Engine Is Kicking In

Beyond staking, Ethereum’s supply mechanics are tightening due to protocol-level design. Since the activation of EIP-1559 and the Merge, Ethereum has become a deflationary asset under most conditions. With every transaction, ETH is burned, reducing net issuance.

According to

Blockchain.News

, net daily issuance is now frequently negative, especially during periods of high network activity. That means Ethereum’s supply is not only being locked in staking, it’s also shrinking from the top down.

Layer 2 usage, NFT activity, and DeFi gas spikes all feed into the burn rate. As the network’s transaction volume increases, the pressure on ETH supply continues to intensify.

Institutional Signals Point to Accumulation

The institutional narrative around Ethereum has also shifted. As of Q2 2025, several major asset managers have begun accumulating ETH, both directly and via staking. According to

Cointelegraph

, BlackRock and Bitwise filed for ETH staking ETF products in June, hoping to capture yield-seeking capital in the retirement and hedge fund space.

Meanwhile, the SEC has clarified in recent weeks that staking does not, on its own, constitute an investment contract or security, so long as it operates through decentralized validators. This removes a major hurdle for institutions that previously avoided ETH due to legal ambiguity.

As ETFs gain traction and regulatory risks shrink, it’s likely that traditional finance will begin treating Ethereum the way it now treats Bitcoin, an institutional-grade asset with embedded yield.

How Traders Can Prepare With Jumper Exchange

In a market moving this fast, tools matter. If Ethereum enters a true supply crunch, speed and transparency will determine who captures alpha, and who gets left behind.

offers full course modules on how issuance, staking, and deflation interact over time.

Could This Be the Start of a Mega Rally?

Ethereum has always been at the center of innovation in crypto, from ICOs and DeFi to NFTs and rollups. But now, for the first time, its tokenomics are aligning with scarcity models that resemble gold or high-growth equities. Supply is down. Yield is up. Demand is rising.

If staking continues at its current pace, and if institutional capital flows follow the ETF path Bitcoin laid out, Ethereum could break out of its current consolidation range and test new highs before the end of the year.

That said, traders should remain cautious. Short squeezes, regulatory shocks, and yield reversals can still spark major reversals. The best strategy is to stay nimble, informed, and well-equipped.

With platforms like Jumper Exchange, you can turn volatility into strategy, reacting faster than the headlines and capitalizing on inefficiencies that others miss.
