What Is Crypto Dust and How to Sweep It Across Chains with Jumper

The average DeFi wallet holds tokens on four or five different chains. Most of those wallets also hold a few dollars in crypto dust that you will never touch, because spending it costs more in gas fees than the dust is worth. So, the dead value just sits there, cluttering your portfolio and almost forgotten.

Until now.

Jumper

just launched a cross-chain dust sweeper that lets you convert those small token balances into a single usable asset, across chains, in one transaction. This is the first cross-chain dust conversion tool built into a DeFi aggregator, and it changes how you deal with the scraps left behind after all the swapping and depositing is done.

Here's what crypto dust actually is, why it accumulates, and exactly how to sweep it using Jumper.

What Is Crypto Dust (And Why Is It Stuck in Your Wallet)?

Crypto dust is any token balance too small to be worth moving. On Bitcoin, amounts below 546 satoshis (roughly $0.05) fall below the dust limit, the formal threshold where transaction fees exceed a token's value. On Ethereum and other EVM chains, the dust limit is less precise but the problem is the same: you have tokens worth $0.30 or $2.50 sitting in your wallet, and the gas fees to swap or transfer them would eat the entire amount. Every chain has its own version of this problem, and every chain contributes more crypto dust to your wallet over time.

Dust forms in three main ways. First, transaction leftovers. When you swap 0.5 ETH and the exchange rate doesn't produce a clean number, fractions remain. Second, exchange minimums. Trading platforms set minimum trade sizes, so if you hold 0.0005 ETH after a trade, it's below the threshold to do anything with. Third, airdrops and promotions. Projects distribute small token amounts to thousands of wallets for marketing. Those tokens often have negligible value per wallet but become permanent fixtures in your balance list.

The result is a portfolio page full of line items worth less than a coffee. Individually, nobody cares about $1.20 in a random token on Arbitrum. But multiply that across every chain you've ever touched, every airdrop you've received, and every trade that left a remainder, and the crypto dust adds up. It becomes a portfolio management problem hiding in plain sight.

The Real Cost of Dust Sitting in Your Portfolio

Dust isn't just a visual annoyance. It has real costs that compound over time.

The Gas Problem

The core issue is economic. Moving a $2 token on Ethereum during moderate network congestion might cost $3 to $8 in

gas fees

. The math doesn't work. So the token stays. On cheaper chains like Base or Arbitrum, gas is lower, but you might hold dust across five or six chains simultaneously. Even at $0.10 per transaction, sweeping dust manually on each chain means multiple wallet confirmations, multiple gas payments, and a significant time cost for marginal value.

Portfolio Clutter

Anyone who has used

Jumper Portfolio

or any multi-chain tracker knows the feeling: scrolling through a holdings list polluted by 15 tokens worth under $1 each. The tokens you actually care about get buried. Tracking real performance becomes harder when your portfolio is 60% dust by line count, even if it's only 1% by value.

Tax Complexity

Here's one that catches people off guard. In many jurisdictions, every crypto dust disposal is a taxable event. That includes disposing of dust. If you accumulated 47 micro-positions across three chains over a year, each one technically needs to be accounted for. The accounting overhead of dust often exceeds its value, which is the definition of a broken incentive.

Dusting Attack Surface

There's also a security angle. Dusting attacks work by sending tiny amounts of crypto to a large number of wallets, then monitoring blockchain activity to link those wallets to real identities. The more dust sitting in your wallet, the noisier your on-chain footprint becomes. Consolidating and converting dust into a single asset reduces the number of tokens an attacker can use to trace your activity.

How Dust Sweeping Works on Jumper

Dust sweeping, also called dust conversion, is the process of converting multiple small token balances into a single, usable asset. Exchanges like Binance pioneered this in 2018 with their "Convert Small Balance to BNB" feature, which let traders clean up exchange-held crypto dust. But that only worked for balances held on Binance itself, on a single centralized platform.

The problem for DeFi users has always been different. Your crypto dust isn't sitting on an exchange. It's scattered across self-custody wallets on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Solana, and every other chain you've interacted with. Until recently, the only option was the now-deprecated DustSweeper protocol, which worked on Ethereum alone and required approving each token individually. There was no way to sweep dust across chains in a single action.

Jumper's dust sweeper does something none of these solutions could: it lets you sweep dust and convert dust tokens across multiple chains into a single asset, routed through

LI.FI's Composer

, in one transaction. This is cross-chain dust conversion built directly into a DeFi aggregator. The conversion uses the same cross-chain routing infrastructure that powers Jumper's swap and bridge aggregator, meaning you get the best available rate for each token, even if the amounts are tiny.

The way it works is straightforward. Jumper scans your connected wallet, identifies tokens below a threshold you set (from $5 to $30), and bundles them into a single conversion. You pick your target chain and target asset, review the quote, and confirm. The aggregator handles the rest: routing each token through the optimal DEX, consolidating the output, and delivering your chosen asset to your wallet.

Step-by-Step: Sweep Your Dust Across Chains with Jumper

Here's the exact flow for using Jumper's dust sweeper to clean up your portfolio.

Step 1: Open Your Portfolio and Spot the Dust Banner

Connect your wallet to

Jumper

and navigate to the Portfolio tab. If your wallet holds convertible dust, you'll see a banner at the top showing the total value of dust tokens available for conversion. Click "Convert Dust" to open the sweeper.

Step 2: Set Your Dust Threshold

The sweeper lets you define what counts as dust for your portfolio. Choose a threshold: $5, $10, $20, or $30. Any token balance below your chosen threshold will be flagged as eligible for conversion. If you're being conservative, start with $5. If you want a deep clean, go with $30.

Step 3: Select Your Chain and Output Token

Pick the chain where you want to receive the consolidated output. Options include Ethereum, Solana, BSC, and Base. Then select your target token. Most people consolidate into ETH or a stablecoin, but you can choose whatever you want.

Step 4: Review the Conversion Quote

Jumper's aggregator calculates the best route for each dust token, factors in gas, and shows you a single quote. You'll see the total input value, the number of tokens being swept, the output amount, and the estimated fee. The conversion routes through Composer via LI.FI, which checks 33 DEXs across 61 chains for the best rate.

Step 5: Confirm and Convert

Hit "Convert Dust" to execute. The transaction processes on-chain, and you'll see a confirmation screen showing the exact amount received. In testing, a conversion of $5.99 in dust tokens across three tokens on Ethereum returned $5.95 in ETH, with total fees under $0.05.

That's it. What would have taken 15 separate transactions, five chain switches, and at least 30 minutes of clicking now happens in a single confirmation.

Why Jumper's Dust Sweeper Is Different

The existing solutions for crypto dust fall into three categories, and each one has a gap that Jumper fills.

Centralized exchanges like Binance and Crypto.com let you convert dust to their native token (BNB, CRO). That works if your dust is on the exchange. But DeFi dust, by definition, lives in your self-custody wallet across multiple chains. Exchange dust converters can't touch it.

DustSweeper, the Ethereum-based protocol, was the closest thing to a decentralized solution. But it only worked on Ethereum mainnet, required individual token approvals, and has since been deprecated following EIP-7702.

Wallet-based approaches like Rabby's proposed dust sweep feature remain a GitHub issue, not a shipped product.

Jumper's approach is different because it sits on top of

cross-chain routing infrastructure

that already handles billions in monthly volume. The dust sweeper isn't a separate product bolted on. It's an extension of the same aggregation engine that finds the best swap and bridge routes for large trades. That means even your $1.50 in a random token gets the same routing optimization as a $50,000 swap.

The multi-chain support is the real differentiator. DeFi fragmentation means your activity is spread across

many chains and apps

. Your dust is too. A tool that only sweeps dust on one chain solves 20% of the problem. Jumper sweeps across Ethereum, Solana, BSC, Base, and more, which is where the actual value recovery happens.

What This Means for Your Portfolio

Here's a concrete way to think about the value. Say you hold dust worth $3.20 on Ethereum, $1.80 on Arbitrum, $4.50 on Base, and $2.10 on Solana. That's $11.60 in total. Not life-changing, but not nothing either. Before Jumper's dust sweeper, recovering that $11.60 would have cost you more in gas and time than it was worth. Now it costs one click and a few cents in fees.

Scale that across the entire DeFi ecosystem, where millions of wallets hold dust across dozens of chains, and you start to see why this matters. The aggregate value of crypto dust sitting idle in DeFi wallets runs into the hundreds of millions of dollars. Most of it will never be touched without a tool like this.

If you've been building your portfolio across chains, start with a dust sweep. Head to

Jumper Portfolio

, look for the dust banner, and

rebalance your crypto portfolio

from a clean slate. Crypto dust doesn't have to be a permanent feature of your wallet. Fewer line items. More usable capital. One transaction.
